{"id":14311,"date":"2019-08-30T22:48:56","date_gmt":"2019-08-30T20:48:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/skyddaskogen.se.hemsida.eu\/oakland-institute-sweden-displaces-ugandan-farmers-for-carbon-trading\/"},"modified":"2021-02-17T21:02:35","modified_gmt":"2021-02-17T20:02:35","slug":"oakland-institute-sweden-displaces-ugandan-farmers-for-carbon-trading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/skyddaskogen.se\/en\/oakland-institute-sweden-displaces-ugandan-farmers-for-carbon-trading\/","title":{"rendered":"Oakland Institute: Sweden Displaces Ugandan Farmers for Carbon Trading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-13121\" src=\"http:\/\/skyddaskogen.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/skyddaskogen.se_kachung1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Green Resources\u2019 pine plantation in Kachung.\u00a0Photo: Kristen Lyons\/The Oakland Institute.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>A new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandinstitute.org\/sites\/oaklandinstitute.org\/files\/evicted-carbon_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">briefing paper<\/a>\u00a0by The Oakland Institute brings forward evidence that the Norwegian forestry and carbon credit company, Green Resources, evicted villagers around their tree plantation in Kachung, Uganda.\u00a0The Swedish Energy Agency purchases carbon credits from Green Resources.\u00a0The establishment of the\u00a0large-scaleplantation on land previously used by subsistence farmers\u00a0has resulted in loss of land, livelihoods and\u00a0created\u00a0an on-going food security crisis\u00a0for the local\u00a0villagers.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish Energy Agency reports to Swedish TV4 (in writing) that it considers Green Resources\u00a0to be compliant to the Agency&#8217;s reform demands for the local villagers.<\/p>\n<p>Green Resources also has new majority shareholders, the public development institutions of Norway and Finland &#8211; Norfund and Finnfund &#8211; which rescued it from bankruptcy in July 2018. These institutions are aware of the land grab, yet continue to finance the project despite Green Resources\u2019 abuse against the communities at Kachung.<\/p>\n<p>Oakland Institute\u00a0releases company documents\u00a0in\u00a0its\u00a0briefing paper &#8211; including letters showing that villagers have been evicted fom the plantations.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0briefing paper\u00a0also exposes the complicity of the international certification body Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)\u00a0which\u00a0is\u00a0supposed to verify the company\u2019s compliance with environmental and social standards. The FSC\u00a0audit\u00a0report from 2016 has omitted the impact of the land grab despite of\u00a0an ongoing lawsuit where the villagers in Kachung sued Green Resources and the National Forest Authority.<\/p>\n<p>Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Mousseau, Policy Director of the Oakland Institute, said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oaklandinstitute.org\/forced-evictions-green-resources-forestry-plantation-uganda\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> (Oakland Institute):<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBased on flawed audits, the accreditation Green Resources received from the certification agencies calls into question their commitment to social and environmental standards. In the name of fighting climate change, they claim that a large-scale plantation of non-native pine trees, which are to be cut and sold as timber, is preferable to subsistence activities of African farmers.
