This has been ongoing for several years right in front of the eyes of the EU and with the support of the Romanian Government. In the beginning of February, Protect the Forest signed an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronatur.org\/fileadmin\/docs\/Urwald-Kampagne_Rumaenien\/Open_Letter_to_Romanian_President_and_Government_Natural_Forest_Heritage_11.02.2020.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open letter<\/a> together with other international environmental NGOs in order to get the Romanian Government to act. Also watch this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2BBPRBOUPAs&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;fbclid=IwAR0UDY_kECADqJnOKjr7UulGnhSHULiJI5dSRjYjxdIUkSp2j8y9SY-T4Gg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">documentary<\/a>, and share it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, now the European Commission is taking legal action against Romanian authorities for illegal logging of Europe&#8217;s last primeval forests.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement follows complaints submitted last year to the European Commission by environmental groups <a href=\"http:\/\/en.agentgreen.ro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Agent Green<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clientearth.org\/press\/eu-announces-legal-action-against-romania-for-illegal-logging-of-europes-last-natural-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ClientEarth <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronatur.org\/en\/news\/detail\/news\/romanias-government-called-on-to-protect-the-forests\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EuroNatur <\/a>against Romania\u2019s ongoing and deliberate destruction of tens of thousands of hectares of its protected old-growth and primeval forests.<\/p>\n<p>The groups mean that Romania\u2019s state forestry management is conducting logging operations within protected Natura 2000 areas without proper analysis of the impact in these unique sites. Failure to carry adequate and strategic environmental assessments when approving logging in protected areas and lack of access to environmental information breaches EU law.<\/p>\n<p>The environmental groups therefore welcome the launch of the Commission\u2019s infringement proceedings against Romania as a new hope to protect the country\u2019s natural forests.<\/p>\n<p>The Romanian government will have one month to send a detailed reply to the concerns raised by the European Commission.
