The Swedish government, with the Minister for the Environment at the helm, today presented its new strategy for Swedish species protection. A strategy that focuses solely on how to protect forestry from species protection. Not how to deal with the extensive species depletion that is taking place in our forests. It is certainly good that landowners can receive compensation when EU-protected species severely restrict forestry, but at the same time dismantling the protection of nationally protected species to exclude forestry leaves a bad aftertaste. Picking an orchid becomes illegal – crushing it with a forest machine becomes legal. This is what the government’s species protection policy looks like in reality.
How things are going for the disadvantaged and endangered species is basically not cared about, but everything is about forestry. The problem of impoverishment and the loss of biodiversity are being swept under the carpet. There, the species are then left to die out and disappear. This is what the “world-class Swedish species protection”, which EU Minister Jessica Rosenkrans spoke about at the press conference, looks like in practice. It can once again be noted that the Swedish government lacks both the will and the commitment to Swedish nature and its diversity.
