Our goals

According to the association’s statutes, Skydda Skogen shall work for:

  • Protection of forests with high natural values and conservation and development, including restoration, of biodiversity in forest and tree environments.
  • Reform of forestry into a long-term ecologically and socially sustainable multi-use system, where care for the environment takes precedence over production.
  • To counteract the climate crisis where it overlaps with forest issues.

Skydda Skogen wants to:

  • Ensure that at least 30% of productive forest below the mountain forest boundary is permanently protected in ecologically representative and connected areas, which also preserves important carbon stocks for the climate. To achieve this goal:
    • all forests with high natural values must be protected
    • forests must be restored
  • Ensure full protection of the mountain-near forest
  • Ensure that restored forests are protected and managed functionally to:
    • mimic the natural processes of primeval forests
    • support biodiversity in core habitats
    • develop biodiversity at the landscape level
  • Ensure that protected primeval forests develop freely with natural processes and, where appropriate, prescribed burning. Other manual management should only occur to recreate and preserve natural values in restored and culturally influenced forests.
  • Preserve old trees in all environments
  • Restore and preserve overgrown pastures with old trees through traditional use
  • Protect red-listed species and species lacking favorable conservation status
  • Replace today’s dominant forestry methods—clear-cutting, soil preparation, and monoculture planting—with close-to-nature forestry
  • Ensure the use of forest products stays within planetary boundaries, including a significant reduction of short-lived products and the elimination of subsidies for forest biofuels and bioenergy
  • Protect the forest’s multi-use values, such as reindeer herding, mushroom and berry picking, ecotourism, etc.
  • Preserve the forest’s value for outdoor recreation, health, and nature experiences
