Boreal Mushroom Forests
Boreal Fungal Forests is a conservation mycological project that started in the spring of 2025, after two years of preparatory work. Our main goal is to strengthen the knowledge base required for endangered species and forests with high conservation values to be formally identified, prioritised and protected.
In the project, we work with soil fungi in diverse and at the same time highly endangered forest types within the boreal zone in Sweden, with a special focus on the counties of Norrland. These are large areas of the country where knowledge about the occurrence and distribution of fungi is inadequate. A large number of rare fungi have their main global distribution here and are thus Nordic responsible species, but despite this, there are many white spots on the map.
