Reports from the Research Trip in the Outskirts of Nature Conservation 2024

We are proud to present the comprehensive reports from the Research Trip to the Wilderness of Nature Conservation 2024. For the first time, the Research Trip was carried out in two different places in the country at the same time, Moskosel in Arvidsjaur municipality and the area around Fågelsjö in the municipalities of Ljusdal and Härjedalen.

The reports contain a detailed description of the natural values of the areas and which species are at risk of being lost if the forests are felled.

The participants on both trips inventoried many areas that turned out to be fantastically beautiful natural forests with a large number of red-listed species. Nearly six thousand finds of a total of about one hundred and fifty conservation species were found during the week. Despite the irreplaceable natural values of forests, they lack protection today. Several of the inventoried forests are also facing immediate threats of felling from the forest companies Sveaskog and Stora Enso, as well as by Ljusdal municipality.

In addition to documenting the natural values in the visited forests, the reports constitute an important and revealing review of the actions of environmentally certified forest companies and Sweden’s lack of work with forest protection. Sveaskog and Stora Enso are both FSC-certified, a certification that is supposed to guarantee sustainable forestry, but which time and time again proves incapable of dealing with serious violations.
