Every year, the outdoor shop Naturkompaniet donates money through the Nature Bonus to inspiring nature and environmental projects around Sweden. One percent of the amount from the members’ purchases is distributed to organizations and nature conservation projects. This year’s theme is biodiversity, and Protect the Forest is one of the nominated associations for the second time.
In 2021, Protect the Forest held courses and lectures on the value of forests and also conducted a nature value inventory of forests in Sweden. With support from Naturbonusen, the association wants to continue this work in 2022 so that more forest can be protected from logging.
“We are very happy that we have once again been nominated for the Nature Bonus. It is an acute situation for the unprotected natural forests in Sweden and their threatened biodiversity. With today’s slow rate of protection and the rapid transformation of the forest landscape by clear-felling, virtually all unprotected real forest in Sweden will be gone in just 10-15 years. We therefore want to inspire more people to work for the protection of our last natural forests and a reform to close-to-nature forestry,” says Sebastian Kirppu, Forest Ambassador, Protect the Forest.
Protect the Forest plans to hold courses and lectures and in other ways spread information about the forest and its biodiversity. The association also wants to help people who want to save forests.
– Is perhaps the last piece of old-growth forest near you has been notified of felling? Then we want resources to help with the nature value inventory of the forest, and provide support for how you can proceed with saving the forest and get authorities to act. There are probably forest owners who want to protect their forest and who wonder if it has high conservation values and what they should do to protect it, then Protect the Forest wants to be able to help,” says Sebastian Kirppu.
